Heroes of the Great Outdoors

Before you learn about this poster you should understand that, as a white person, I was not the best choice to illustrate this. I did not understand this fully until recently. I illustrated this in 2016 as part of an editorial assignment for my job at the time. But I now understand that I had the agency and power to ask them to hire an artist of color instead. I wish that I had, and this knowledge will inform how I move forward as a white artist in this world.

I’ve stopped selling this poster in my webstore. But I still have about 700 copies that I’m looking to donate to a POC led community organization who is interested in receiving the remaining inventory of these posters a donation. I can give you a tutorial about how to run a webstore, and will deliver the posters free of cost. If you would like to nominate an organization, or if you represent an interested organization please contact me at eren@erenkwilson.com

ITEM DETAILS

24" x 36" poster- (comes with biographies of each hero. CLICK HERE to download the print-able two page PDF)

Originally created for Carolyn Finney's article for Outside Magazine, this poster features 10 incredible people who are working to inspire the black and brown youth of our nation to get out and enjoy the great outdoors. As we celebrated the centennial of the national parks in 2016, many sources began to examine that participation in the parks was majority white. Carolyn Finney's article offers that perhaps we can begin to address this by honoring the black and brown elders who have been working for decades to preserve our environment and inspire young people to explore them. Each poster comes with a short biography of each person featured so that you can learn more about them.

Proceeds from the sale of this poster are donated to non-profit organizations. So far, we’ve been able to send donations to The New Orleans organization House of Tulip and look forward to including more!
