Free Marissa 2014
Marissa Alexander is a survivor of domestic violence from Jacksonville, FL who was prosecuted and threatened with 60 years in prison for defending her life from her abusive husband. After serving a sentence of 3 years behind bars and 2 years in house detention while being forced to wear and pay for a surveillance ankle monitor, Marissa Alexander was finally released on January 27, 2017.
I made this comic ( and animated it into a music video) to raise awareness for her Campaign as she faced her court trial in 2014.
If you would like to learn more about Marissa and other women like her who have survived abusive relationships only to suffer at the hands of the justice system, please click here to visit the SURVIVEDANDPUNISHED.ORG which is seeking justice for many women who have survived domestic abuse only to suffer punishment for it.
The choice of symbolism, metaphor, and images were all collaborations with the campaign organizers. I am proud of this collaboration, but as I am growing older I now have the hindsight to see how I could have drawn some of their requests more successfully/respectfully.
Please e-mail me at eren@erenkwilson if you are interested in discussing this! <3 But no matter what, I’m grateful for every minute that I spent working on this project- every incarcerated mother deserves a comic book written about them.
